What are they

If you have been in business for some time now, you should know there are rules set in place for ADA Compliance. Set by the American Disabilities Act, these rules are in place to ensure that people with disabilities have the same level of accessibility as otherwise abled-bodied customers being served.

We’ve all heard the stories of buildings not “up to code.” It’s because after they were first implemented in 1990, ADA requirements became fundamental to the functionality of every public place. They are built into building codes, dictating the way offices and locations can be designed for accessibility. They generally raised the standard of excellence for all people.

You can read more about them here: https://www.ada.gov

But the ADA oversees more than the function and accessibility of buildings. What’s new to ADA oversight are rules and guidelines for the accessible consumption of digital content and web design. Things like audible transcriptions or text equivalents to images, these additional accommodations can make or break the user experience for individuals with unique challenges.  These guidelines are outlined under the ADA and WCAG 2.0 compliance that went into effect in 2018.

Why are they important

ADA Compliance helps those with disabilities have equal access. This now includes virtual spaces as well as physical ones.

No matter what your stance is on these matters, ADA Compliance is not here to protect the rights of the business owners, but those that need the assistance.

In regards to websites, it is important to be ADA and WCAG 2.0 Compliant so that every visiting person with a disability, blind, color blind, deaf, hard of hearing, or otherwise, can successfully use your website as effectively as any other client or customer could.

How does it affect your online business

At the moment, small businesses have not yet been the targets of many lawsuits. However, some musical artists and political candidates have already come under fire, for not following the new guidelines. Some have even been hit with a few lawsuits, here and there. With this 2.0 Compliance, it is not surprising the trends haven’t immediately caught up to the new legislation.

What you need to be aware of is that it only takes one lawsuit to start a fire. You don’t want to be caught without being in compliance. Picture the significance of missing the chance of a lifetime in the most glorified landmark in history, simply because the elevator wasn’t working that day. That is the significance of Compliance 1.0. This is Compliance 2.0. To be found not “up to code” can hurt your business, bruise client relations and could potentially leave you bankrupt.

There is a solution, that can be pretty painless…

How do you comply

You could go through the list of compliance requirements, piece by piece, and hire a web designer or developer to fix all the issues that need to be made. Ultimately, that could take hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars (Trust us, we have done it by hand for a client in the past. It took us 95 hours and cost her $5,000).

If you can use a tool that automatically fixed the problem areas and made your website ADA WCAG 2.0 Compliant in ONE click, I’d imagine you would be eager to find that easier solution.
